With damp weather continuing, wild mushrooms are starting to pop up in yards and landscapes throughout Summit County.

While they may look harmless, some varieties found in Ohio are highly poisonous and can cause serious illness or even be deadly.

Summit County Public Health reminds residents to:

• Never eat wild mushrooms.
• Keep children and pets away from them.
• Remove mushrooms from your yard as soon as they appear.
• Place them in a plastic bag, tie it tightly and dispose of it in the trash.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling them.

If you or someone in your household eats a wild mushroom and begins feeling sick, seek medical attention immediately.
